A Few Steps Back

Colt was not himself today, really lethargic and he's normally so fiesty. He had a rough night last night and into the morning. He had a few large episodes with his saturation dropping to the teens (it is supposed to be 85-90). His heart rate dropped really low a few times too (to the 40's and it is supposed to be in the 150-170 range). It happened twice while we were there, and on the last episode it was pretty bad so they had to put him back on CPAP because he just decided to stop breathing. They are giving him some help again with the pressure and will do a blood gas to see how he's doing a little later. If he gets two good blood gases and does better- he can go back on the nasal cannula. They gave him blood today, Papa Denny's blood (that'll do the trick)....because his hematicrit was low. They ran a blood culture and blood work to see if he has an infection that is causing all of these problems and his white blood cell count was fine. They're still going to start him on antibiotics just to be cautious, while they wait to see if the cultures grow any bugs in them. This is all just part of the NICU experience, as we've been told numerous times. A few steps forward, and a few steps back.
